Chapter 04

Badrica

From a registration list to a printed badge in under five seconds.

The summit opens at nine. By quarter past eight, the queue at the front desk wraps round the lobby.

Two volunteers are flicking through a printed list, writing names on sticky labels by hand. And someone important has just been spelled wrong.

if you've been to a conference here, you've stood in this line.

The problem

Most check-ins still run on paper.

Conferences across East Africa still check people in from printed lists and manual name lookups, with generic badges produced hours before the doors open. When something goes wrong at the desk, there's no system to fall back on. Organisers deserved better, and so did the people standing in line.

Badrica is a product of Pinnisoft Ltd. The implementation is confidential; the journey every design and engineering decision was built around is not.

How it works

From list to lanyard in five steps.

Upload the listOrganisers drop in their expected attendees.
E-pass goes outPinnitags, Pinnisoft's communication engine, sends each person a personal QR pass.
Scan at the deskStaff scan, the system checks the live registry.
Badge printsOn-site, in seconds, with access permissions encoded on it.
Scan each otherAttendees swap contact details by scanning badges.

I worked on the product design and front-end. The Badrica apps are built in Flutter and the website in Next.js, which I designed and built myself, from Figma to live in one week.

Looking back

I'd do again

Treating the printed badge as the product. If the badge gets the name, tier and access right, everything downstream just works.

I'd do differently

I'd put a big, friendly “reprint” button on the desk UI from day one. Lanyards snap. Coffee spills. People sit on things.
